Homemade Cranberry Sauce
Homemade cranberry sauce is a delightful accompaniment to many holiday meals, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. It’s surprisingly easy to make from scratch. Here’s a simple recipe!
Ingredients
- 12 ounces (about 3 cups) fresh cranberries
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- Zest of 1 orange (optional)
- Juice of 1 orange (about 1/2 cup)
- 1 cinnamon stick (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
Instructions
1
Rinse the fresh cranberries under cold water, removing any stems or blemished berries. Drain them thoroughly.
2
Combine the cranberries, granulated sugar, water, and the optional cinnamon stick in a medium saucepan.
3
If you'd like to add extra flavor, zest the orange and add the zest to the saucepan. Then, juice the orange and add fresh juice to the cranberries.
4
If you want a bit of extra spice, you can also add the ground cinnamon.
5
Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally.
6
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes. Continue to stir occasionally as the cranberries burst and the sauce thickens.
7
Taste the cranberry sauce and adjust the sweetness by adding more sugar if needed. Keep in mind that the sauce will thicken as it cools.
8
Remove the saucepan from the heat Once the cranberries have mainly burst and the sauce has thickened to your liking (it will continue to thicken as it cools).
9
Remove the cinnamon stick if you used one.
10
Let the cranberry sauce cool to room temperature. As it cools, it will further thicken.
11
Transfer the homemade cranberry sauce to a serving dish or airtight container and refrigerate until ready to serve.
12
Serve your homemade cranberry sauce as a delicious side to complement your holiday meal.
